Montel, a global leader of high-density mobile storage shelving system solutions, is pleased to announce today that it has been granted a fourth Patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for its latest technological development. Titled Braking System for Mobile Storage Unit, also known as Mechanical Safety Brake, Montel’s Patent No. 7,645,000 covers a driving mechanism having a braking system, for use on a movable storage unit.

More specifically, Montel’s Patent No. 7,645,000 is described as a braking device immediately stopping any carriage movement while a user or an object is in the aisle, where the handle-locking device has not previously been engaged. A toe-level kick plate engages a gravity-activated mechanism, which stops Montel’s full-length torque-resistant shaft rotation thus, any carriage movement at the same time. The braking mechanism resets itself upon removal of the pressure on the kick plate.
Montel’s Mobile Storage Unit Braking System is available with manual or mechanical carriages. Full-length floor-level safety bar on both sides of the aisle will stop carriage movement anywhere in the module when as little as 1.5 lbs (6.7 N) of pressure is applied on the safety bar. Additionally, Mobile Storage Unit Braking System:
Improves user safety;
Automatically stops the carriage from moving into a closing aisle if a person applies pressure on the sweep;
Automatic resets once the obstruction is removed; At 5/8” (16mm) above the floor, even small objects will stop the carriage from moving;
Ensures a consistent high quality installation in the field since factory pre-assembled; Stops smoothly the system and reduces vibration due to a unique absorber coupling;
Requires no electrical power due to the unique gravity-activated mechanism, thus contributes to earning LEED™ certification.
